Montreal get ready for your heart to go on and on!
The New York award-winning musical Titanique is sailing its way into the country this month, making its Canadian debut in Montreal — taking on Quebec icon Céline Dion’s greatest hits while intertwining it with the eleven-time Oscar-winning blockbuster film Titanic.
“My mission with this piece,” said Tye Blue, director and co-writer of the musical. “Is to give people 100 minutes of pure, uninterrupted joy.”
“It’s a little intimidating, like being here in Quebec, like the home of Céline herself,” explained Blue. “To me, I feel like an extra level of pressure.”
“But it’s also very exciting to get to bring, you know, our love letter to her, home.”
Before coming home, the splash hit has been running off-Broadway for three years now.
“Titanique is basically a fever dream of Céline Dion thinking that she was on the Titanic,” said Blue. “It’s kind of her kooky, crazy, remembrance of what she thinks happened.”
“But then also there are parts that she kind of can’t remember,” he added. “So she improvises some things.”
“It’s very campy, it’s very unhinged, it’s very silly.”
The now all-Canadian production has a stellar cast including Quebec star — Véronique Claveau – as Dion.
“Like I feel good,” said Claveau. “It’s amazing.”
“I have two favorite parts,” said Seth Zosky, who is playing the role of Jack Dawson. “One of them is Taking Chances, which we just did, because it’s so fresh, it’s so exciting.”
“And also the last scene,” he added. “Jack dies if you’ve ever seen the movie, and that scene is like a very, very big physical comedy bit for me.”
“And it is a blast, got to see it.”
The must-sea production is ready to fill Montreal’s Segal Centre for Performing Arts with laughter from Oct. 27 to Nov. 24.
And after they’re done there — the show sets sail for Toronto’s CAA Theatre.
“It’s a pretty beautiful experience,” said Blue. “To get to be here and do this.”
