A 32-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death Saturday night of a 37-year-old man at the Guy-Concordia métro station.

Prosecutors say Risnique Jean Louis appeared in a Montreal court on Wednesday afternoon. He was charged with the second-degree murder of Donald Orlando Wright. The Crown objected to Risnique’s release and his next court date is scheduled for Thursday. He cannot request a bail hearing until his case is transferred to Quebec’s Superior Court.

Montreal police said he was arrested Tuesday night in the borough of Montreal North.

A 911 call around 11:20 p.m. Saturday reported that a man had been stabbed on the métro station platform. The victim was taken to a hospital, but died of his injuries. The slaying was the 29th homicide recorded this year in Montreal police territory.

Police noted that the victim and suspect knew each other.

A bail hearing in the case is scheduled to take place Thursday.

Jean Louis is currently awaiting trial on a charge of assault causing bodily harm. He has pleaded not guilty in that case and is scheduled to return to court in early November. He also faces two charges of failing to comply with the conditions of his release that were laid over the summer and is scheduled to return to court on Monday in that case.

Alain Vaillancourt, the Montreal executive committee member responsible for public security, praised investigators for the speedy arrest, saying their devotion to keeping Montrealers safe is making the city more secure.
