Quebec investing $603M over 5 years to protect French

Quebec will invest $603 million over a period of five years to counter the decline of French in Quebec, French Language Minister Jean-François Roberge announced Sunday.

It’s part of his plan to protect French in the province.

Roberge was accompanied by Minister of Immigration Christine Fréchette, Minister of Culture Mathieu Lacombe, Minister of Higher Education Pascale Déry, Minister of Education Bernard Drainville and Minister of International Relations Martine Biron, who are all part of the Action Group for the Future of the French Language.

The “Plan for the French Language of Quebec” includes nine priorities, including the annual monitoring of indicators of the province’s linguistic situation; the increase in the percentage of economic immigrants who know French; and the acceleration of obtaining permanent residence for foreign students graduating from French-speaking programs.

“From these nine priorities arise 21 measures already implemented or which will be deployed over the coming months to ensure the future of the French language,” indicated Minister Roberge’s office in a press release.
