A 42-year-old woman found unconscious Tuesday night at the scene of a fire in the city’s Pointe-aux-Trembles district was the victim of a homicide, Montreal police said, and a 29-year-old woman found near the scene of the slaying has been arrested.

Firefighters were called to the apartment building on Versailles St. near Forsyth St. around 7 p.m.

The woman was found inside an apartment and taken outside, where first responders were unable to resuscitate her.

An examination of the woman’s body found marks of violence that police said are inconsistent with injuries from a fire. Her death was quickly deemed a homicide, the ninth recorded this year on the island of Montreal.

Another woman was found not far from the scene, with injuries to her lower body.

She was taken to hospital for treatment of shock and her life is not considered to be in danger. While treated initially as a material witness, Montreal police announced later that she has been arrested in connection with the homicide.

A crime scene perimeter at the site remains.

Police intend to question other residents of the apartment building as well as contact the victim’s family in an effort to find out more about her.
