Homeless encampment at Victoria Square set up by advocates

Several tents went up in a Montreal greenspace Tuesday night, an encampment made to raise awareness of the city’s housing crisis.

About a dozen tents were installed in Victoria Square – on the border of downtown and Old Montreal – by the group Réseau d’aide aux personnes seules et itinérantes de Montréal (RAPSIM).

The activists want to highlight a “growing humanitarian crisis” caused by the surge in housing costs. The group says the camp went up against the backdrop of municipal authorities dismantling homeless camps “by the hundreds.”

“RAPSIM is now asking the city for a moratorium on makeshift camps and shelters and for health support for people, as long as suitable alternatives are not deployed.”

They also want anyone experiencing homelessness to be involved in the “decision-making processes that affect them.”

The group launched an online petition.
