A swath of southwestern Alberta is under a snowfall warning.

While many regions affected by the weather warning issued Wednesday evening could expect 10 to 20 centimetres of snow, certain areas in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains could receive 30 to 50 cm.

With heavy wet snow expected and the rain-to-snow transitions, snow accumulations will vary widely, Environment Canada said in a Wednesday afternoon update.

“That little bit of extra elevation cools the airmass enough to give that extra amount of snowfall accumulation,” Environment Canada meteorologist Justin Shelley told Postmedia on Tuesday.

The precipitation is expected to turn to flurries by Thursday evening before tapering off on Friday morning, the weather office said.
