Solar storm lights up Quebec skies with spectacular northern lights

Quebecers across the province turned their gazes upwards on Friday night as a spectacular show in the sky was on display thanks to a solar storm hit the earth’s atmosphere.

The storm is expected to last through the weekend.

Montreal Planetarium director Olivier Hernandez said that Hydro-Quebec placed surge removers throughout the network to avoid major blackouts like those that happened during a similar solar storm in 1989.

“They try to have some place to release the energey from the stolar storm in order to avoid any problem with the charged particles,” he said.
