When they arrived, they found Caza dead and her father on the scene. He had suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The Sûreté du Québec took over the investigation when it was declared a homicide.

Last year, on Father’s Day, Caza posted a message about her father on Facebook. She wrote: “Happy Father’s Day to the best Dad in the world. My hero, my emergency contact, strong but gentle and always knows how to make me laugh.”

“I’m shocked and asking myself, ‘Why would a father harm their own child?’ ” Julie Lynn Bayliff said in an email exchange with the Montreal Gazette.

Bayliff wrote that she knew Amanda Caza as a customer at the bank where Bayliff works and described her as someone with lots of personality and a proud mother.

In a post on Facebook, Bayliff wrote a message to Caza saying: “Thank you for your amazing laugh and your positive outlook on life, our chit chats at the bank and your stories of your beautiful daughter.”

Hemmingford Elementary School posted a message to parents of its students explaining that Amanda Caza worked there on Mondays as the school’s secretary “and although she had just joined our team in March, she had already made significant contributions and was a well-respected member of our community.”

“We have been working with the school board to ensure that additional staff is available to support students and staff who may need assistance during this difficult time.”
