CAA-Québec has revealed the worst roads in the province in 2024, chosen by citizens who voted in the annual survey.

The Laurentians dominates the list, with five of the top 10 worst roads, including the top spot: Route 329 in St-Adolphe-d’Howard. Route 329, clearly a go-getter, has moved up from the No. 2 spot in 2023. The Outaouais, Mauricie and Estrie also have their road work cut out for them.

CAA-Québec says the survey is a fun exercise, but notes that in the past the list has led to road repairs, “a sign that citizens’ voices have been heard.”

Last year, Georges St. in Gatineau was listed as the province’s worst road.

“We’ve lost count of the many times Outaouais has appeared in our ranking over the years,” CAA-Quebec said at the time.

Montreal isn’t getting off scot-free. In a regional breakdown, Notre-Dame St. E. is the No. 1 worst road — and Notre-Dame St. W. rounds off list.

“At a time when mobility funding is generating heated debate in the public arena, it’s imperative that the government guarantee safe and efficient infrastructure for all users,” CAA-Québec public affairs vice-president Sophie Gagnon said in a statement.

Quebecers can take heart in the belief that we’re no worse than the rest of Canada, according to Alan Carter, head of the pavement and bituminous materials laboratory at the École de technologie supérieure.

“While road conditions can differ from one province to another, the overall situation is quite similar,” Carter says on the CAA-Québec website. “Generally speaking, between 15 and 25 per cent of the roads are in bad or very bad shape. The numbers are certainly too high, but they’re going down. It’s important to mention, however, that it’s hard to produce a comprehensive analysis of Canada’s roads, since we don’t have a database for that information and the quality criteria vary from one province to the next.”
