A 40-year-old man has died after he was stabbed in a rooming house in Montreal’s Lachine borough Thursday night.

The incident occurred shortly before midnight on 1st Avenue near Provost Street.

Montreal police say the man was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his upper body injuries.

Véronique Dubuc, spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), says police arrested a 28-year-old suspect who was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“According to initial information, the victim was attacked with a sharp object by the suspect who tried to flee before the police arrived. We don’t know the link between the two people, the circumstances or the exact reason for this attack,” said Dubuc.

The man’s death marks Montreal’s eighth homicide of the year.
