The Sûreté du Québec has taken over a homicide investigation in Laval after a 29-year-old man was found dead near midnight in the city’s St-Martin district.

Normally, the SQ takes over homicide investigations in Laval if they appear to be related to organized crime. A spokesperson for the SQ said Thursday morning that the victim “was known to police.”

According to the Journal de Montréal, the 29-year-old man was a member of a street gang.

The SQ spokesperson said Laval police were called after someone spotted the man inside a vehicle parked in a lot near Highway 440 and Curé-Labelle Blvd.

He was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead, the spokesperson said, adding that the SQ is looking into whether a car that was later found on fire in Montreal’s Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough is related to the homicide.

Getaway vehicles used in homicides that are related to organized crime are often abandoned and set on fire to destroy evidence.

No arrests have been made so far.
