Former Montreal mayor Denis Coderre’s chances at becoming the next leader of the Quebec Liberal Party have taken a precipitous drop in a new poll that suggests the perceived frontrunner is a man who has said he doesn’t want it.
Coderre was perceived by 13 per cent of respondents of a Léger-TVA-Journal de Montréal poll conducted May 31-June 3 as best suited to lead the party, a level of support that put him in first place, ahead of Liberal MNA Marwah Rizqy (10 per cent) and interim-leader Marc Tanguay (seven per cent).
However, those numbers changed dramatically among respondents who described themselves as Quebec Liberal supporters.
Coderre, who last February polled a first place position of 27 per cent among Quebec Liberal supporters, this month received just 12 per cent, six points ahead of Rizqy but a staggering 18 points behind Tanguay, who has polled at 30 per cent support despite saying, like Rizqy, that he doesn’t want the leadership.
Coderre has remained coy over whether he will actually run for the top job, telling reporters last week he has made up his mind but will reveal his decision on June 21, once he has returned from a trip to Europe.
