Montreal weather updates: Severe thunderstorm watch issued

Article content

After days of special weather statements highlighting heat risks, Environment Canada has issued yet another, this time warning of the potential for thunderstorms and significant rainfall amounts.

Around 10:15 a.m., Environment Canada replaced the special weather statement with a severe thunderstorm watch. Heavy downpours could cause flash flooding and pooling on roads.

Similar alerts were issued for most of southern Quebec, and special weather statements extend farther north.

Starting Thursday afternoon and into Friday morning, up to 40 millimetres of rain is expected — and with thunderstorms, those amounts could exceed 50 mm, the meteorological agency warns.

The rain isn’t going to do much to break the heat: a high of 28 C is expected in the Montreal area Thursday, with a humidex of 35 C and a UV index of 7, or high. At night, the temperature is expected to drp to 16 C.
