Pro-Palestinian ‘Youth Program’ ad sparks outrage from Montreal’s Jewish community

Members of Montreal’s Jewish community will be holding a protest outside of city hall on Monday, calling on officials to take action against claims of anti-Semitism.

According to the press release, Federation CJA and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) is calling on Mayor Valérie Plante and other elected officials to “restore order” and to “enforce the law” so members of the Jewish community feel protected.

According to the Instagram post, the four-week program, which launches on Monday, will be teaching the history of Palestinian resistance, the current political climate, among other topics.

A press release from McGill University’s president and vice-chancellor, Deep Saini, called the post “extremely alarming” adding that it has attracted international media attention.

In addition, Saini writes that, “imagery evoking violence is not a tool of peaceful expression or assembly.”

The university says they will be increasing security and pursuing legal action to bar SPHR from using the “McGill” name on social media.

McGill will also be pursuing an internal disciplinary process and are calling on other student groups to distance themselves from the SPHR.

Some government officials have taken to social media to denounce the post.

The pro-Palestinian encampment at McGill University was erected on April 27.

The protest will be happening at 12:30 p.m.
