Montreal weather: As heat wave (hopefully) peaks, humidex values to hit 44

The heat warning blanketing Montreal and most of southern Quebec continues Wednesday and won’t fully let up till Friday.

Environment Canada predicts a high of 34 C during the day, with a humidex of 44 C and a UV index of 10, or very high. Don’t expect much relief at night, as the temperature falls only to 26 C.

Older adults, young children and other vulnerable populations are most at risk during heat waves. The Quebec government advises drinking plenty of water, spending at least two hours a day in a cool or air-conditioned space, taking a cool bath or shower at least once a day and limiting physical activity.

Extreme weather is no joke, but to lighten the mood just a degree or so, here are five things that are also 44 this year.

Pac-Man: You see the name and you can hear the music, no matter how young you are. This yellow icon was introduced in 1980 and ghosts have been knocking around mazes ever since.

Compact discs started appearing on store shelves. Now they’re mostly used in art projects.

McDonald’s introduced the McChicken sandwich. There is nothing more we can say about that.

Camcorders became available to the public. People could finally record every moment of their lives — as long as they were hauling around the 4.5-pound beast.

Quebecers rejected the idea of separation from Canada in the 1980 referendum by a vote of 60 per cent.

The No. 1 song on June 19, 1980, was Funkytown by Lipps Inc. There, now the Pac-Man music in your head has been replaced.
