Transport Quebec warns to be extra cautious on roads during Monday’s eclipse

In anticipation of the total solar eclipse, Transport Quebec is warning to be extra cautious on the roads.

In a news release, they say that gatherings planned in several regions to observe the astronomical wonder will lead to heavier traffic, anticipating complicated travel on the road — Users are encouraged to plan their trips carefully and exercise increased vigilance.

The Ministry of Transportation adds that some people might be tempted to stop their vehicle on the side of the road to observe the spectacular phenomenon, but reminds that it is prohibited to stop on the shoulders, in particular to allow emergency vehicles to circulate.

Also, they warn users that they should not be distracted by the eclipse while driving. “Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving,” says the ministry. “Remember, however, that you should not observe the solar eclipse with the naked eye and that windows (even tinted) and the windshield of a vehicle do not provide adequate protection for looking directly at the eclipse.”

The department adds they have set up additional road signs, and mobilized additional staff to ensure increased surveillance of the road Monday — and are working with its partners to carry out optimal traffic management.
