The Montreal police force’s major crimes squad is asking for the public’s help locating a 16-year-old shooting suspect who recently escaped custody in Ontario.

Makail Gas Mohamed, a suspect in a fatal shooting in Dollard-des-Ormeaux in February, fled from a youth centre near Petersburg, Ont., on Sunday.

Following his arrest last week, Montreal police said Mohamed would be charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of 42-year-old Stevens Cantave. Mohamed appeared by videoconference in the youth division of Quebec Court last week.

Cantave was shot several times on Feb. 6 in the parking lot of Galeries des Sources, at the intersection of Sources and Brunswick Blvds. He was declared dead at the scene. It was the fifth homicide in Montreal in 2024.

Two suspects fled the scene using a stolen car before police arrived. The car was found the next day and, following an investigation, Mohamed was identified as possibly being the shooter.

Mohamed stands about 6 foot 1, weighs approximately 155 pounds and was wearing a pale grey sweatsuit when he fled the youth centre.

A judge authorized the temporary distribution of images of Mohamed in an effort to locate him despite the fact that he’s a minor, since he is considered potentially dangerous.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or their local police station. They can also communicate anonymously via Info-Crime Montréal at 514-393-1133 or infocrimemontreal.ca.

A reward of up to $3,000 may be provided by Info-Crime Montréal for information leading to the arrest of suspects.
