Environmental activists once again disrupt access to the Montreal airport

Environmental activists once again disrupted access to Montréal-Trudeau International Airport on Friday.

Members of the group ‘The Last Generation’ once again stuck their hands to the ground on one of the lanes leading out of the Montreal airport loading dock.

“Sorry for the inconvenience — again! Our message is clear: oil kills and we need our governments to endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty,” wrote the group at around 1:30 p.m. on Friday on social media.

A few minutes earlier, Montreal-Trudeau International Airport published this message on the X social network:

“A concerted action by a group of individuals is causing delays at the exit of the YUL airport site. Measures are in place to remedy this situation as soon as possible. We invite users to use the Express Landing facilities located at the parking lots.”

Just before 2 p.m., The Last Generation issued a news release in which it described the intervention:

“At around 12:30 p.m. EST, supporters of Last Generation Canada began blocking Roméo Vachon Boulevard in the direction of the airport arrivals area, with banners reading ‘Oil kills.’ Three supporters stuck their hands in the road and stayed put.”

Third misdeed

On Thursday, a small group of demonstrators from the same organization sprayed paint on the outside windows of the airport.

Montreal police (SPVM) confirmed on Thursday evening that a 25-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were arrested for the mischief and released on a promise to appear.

On Wednesday morning, environmental activists calling for an end to all new fossil-fuel extraction projects had first disrupted access to the airport by sticking their hands to the ground on one of the lanes leading to the Montreal airport landing stage.

Three demonstrators were arrested.

The Last Generation is calling on the Canadian government to endorse a non-proliferation treaty on fossil fuels and, thus, to halt the expansion of fossil fuels.

“We know who started the fires,” the group said in a statement. “At conference after conference, our politicians have failed at the international level to put an end to fossil fuels. The Paris Agreement is dead; we need a real treaty to end the fossil fuel era and ensure a just transition for working people.”

The organization describes itself as a group that advocates non-violent civil resistance.
