Tickets issued to Montrealers riding electric bikes have almost tripled

Montreal police (SPVM) seem to be tightening the screws on delinquent cyclists, as the number of tickets handed out to residents riding electric bikes has reportedly almost tripled from 2019 to 2023.

According to La Presse, the tickets issued has jumped from 755 to 2000 from 2019 to 2023.

The upward trend, not expected to continue this year, they said, seeing that police have already issued 1,301 tickets as of July 29.

La Press adds that the SPVM emphasized in an email that they cannot make assumptions about the increase in the number of tickets issued.

Indicating that there could be various reasons: like the increasing number of electric bikes, arrival of electric BIXIs, increased police vigilance, or targeted operations.

The SPVM added that they have not conducted an analysis on this subject.
