One of the three people wounded in a wild Sunday night shooting in Dollard-des-Ormeaux was charged Tuesday with attempted murder.

Nickael Hickey, 26, of St-Laurent, appeared before a Quebec Court judge at the Montreal courthouse where he now faces charges related to what happened on Sunday, including at least one count of attempted murder. He had been released on bail just two weeks ago in a different case heard at the Montreal courthouse.

He is alleged to be the person who set off a series of events that resulted in several shots fired at a residence on Davignon St. near de Salaberry Blvd. Witnesses reported hearing more than 30 shots fired after Montreal police officers arrived.

A father and son who live in the neighbourhood were also wounded by gunfire exchanged between Montreal police and Hickey.

Besides being charged with attempted murder, Hickey was also charged with violating a court order that he not possess weapons and with breaching conditions he agreed to follow on July 24.

His case returns to court on Wednesday.

According to court records, Hickey was arrested early in July and was charged with breaking and entering. On July 24, he was granted a release after he agreed to make a $500 deposit and to follow a series of conditions, including that he not possess a weapon while the breaking and entering case was pending.

Hickey and the father and son were all taken to a hospital following the shooting. The Sûreté du Québec has taken over the part of the investigation that involves Hickey, but a spokesperson for the provincial police said there was “nothing new to report” on Wednesday despite how Hickey had already been charged at that point.

Quebec’s office of independent investigations (BEI) is investigating the roles that Montreal police officers played in the shooting. According to media reports, the father and son were shot while someone tried to steal the vehicle they were in.

According to information released by the BEI on Monday, one of two individuals involved in a dispute inside a home on Davignon St. exited the residence before any shots were fired. Once outside, he encountered a motorist. He pointed a firearm at the motorist’s vehicle, compelling him to drive away from the scene.

The armed individual then approached a second vehicle where three men were standing close by. Police arriving at the scene then became involved in an exchange of gunfire with the armed man. As the shots were fired, the armed suspect was hit at least once; he was reported to be in serious but stable condition in a hospital on Monday.
