Body found in Quebec river believed to be man swept away after roadway collapse

Police in Quebec say they have recovered a body believed to be the man in his 80s who was swept away by a river during a storm in the Mauricie region on Friday night.

The Sûreté du Québec says the body was found in the Batiscan River in the Lac-aux-Sables area on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to the municipality of Notre-Dame-de-Montauban at around 11:30 p.m. Friday after reports a man was swept away following a nearby roadway collapse.

A search was hampered by dangerous conditions that made the area inaccessible. Provincial police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The road collapsing was a consequence of the historic deluge that washed out roads and flooded basements across Quebec – the remnants of tropical storm Debby dumped record rainfall onto several areas.

Quebec’s transport ministry says the storm caused major damage to several roadways.

Notre-Dame-de-Montauban is about 110 kilometres west of Quebec City.
