Windows of businesses were smashed in Montreal’s Village neighbourhood on Saturday night and two men were arrested during an event organizers called a protest march.

The event was held on the eve of Montreal’s Pride parade during the 18th edition of the Fierté Montreal Festival, which runs from August 1-11, and celebrates the LGBTQ2S+ community.

The protest was organized by Rad Pride, which describes itself as anti-colonialist, anti-police and anti-zionist, among other things.

Marchers walked west along Ste-Catherine St. E. from the Papineau métro station to Beaudry St. starting at about 9:30 p.m.

A 29-year-old man was arrested for armed assault on a police officer and a 26-year-old man was arrested for assault on a police officer, said Montreal police spokesperson Véronique Dubuc.

Both men were released on promises to appear in court.

Neither officer was seriously injured, Dubuc said, and no protesters or other citizens were injured.

No arrests were made for the vandalism to businesses, including a Starbucks, a bank and a real-estate office, but an investigation is underway and there could be other arrests, Dubuc said.
