Quebec still hasn’t revealed teacher shortage numbers

The Quebec government has yet to share the amount of vacant school positions as the start of the school year approaches.

The CAQ claims it will share their numbers after Education Minister Bernard Drainville holds a press conference.

According to Le Devoir, Drainville is scheduled to meet with the media in the upcoming days to provide an overview of the staff shortage.

School service centres had until last Friday to send information to the ministry about the remaining vacant positions.

The ministry believes there will be an increase of around 20,000 students for the upcoming school year — which means they will need an additional 1,000 teachers.

Last year, Minister Drainville met with the media at the start of the school year and said the school network was missing more than 8,000 teachers.

On Tuesday, the government provided figures from May 20, and showed they were short by more than 2,000 employees, including 471 teachers.

In January 2024, teachers signed agreements with the government for a salary increase of up to 24 per cent over five years. However, contract for school principals expired in April 2023 and it has not been renewed.
