Thunderstorm warning: More heavy rain possible for Montreal

Five days after the Montreal region was hit with record levels of rain, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Wednesday afternoon.

There is also a special weather statement for possible heavy rainfall in the region. The weather agency said there is a 40 per cent chance of showers early Wednesday evening with risk of a thunderstorm

The statement includes regions across southern Quebec from just east of Trois-Rivieres to west of the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

Environment Canada meteorologists said they are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain. The cells will affect the eastern part of Montreal Island before reaching the South Shore.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury, the agency warned.

Meantime, it is warning drivers to stay off roads during heavy rain.

“Heavy rain could cause local flash flooding and may affect structures, roads and buildings already weakened by last week’s events,” ECCC said. “Please stay alert in case of heavy rain.”

The rain is forecast to start around 5 p.m. and let up around 6 p.m.
