The man alleged to have started the wild shooting that left him and two other people injured in Dollard-des-Ormeaux two weekends ago renounced his right to a bail hearing while his case at the Montreal courthouse is pending.

Nackeal Hickey, 26, appeared to be wearing a sling over his right shoulder as he appeared before Quebec Court Judge Tristan Desjardins by a video conference Thursday morning from a detention centre.

“Mr. Hickey, as we discussed, do you admit that if we held a bail hearing in your file the judge would keep you detained,” defence lawyer Alexander Grey asked at one point during the brief hearing.

“Yes,” replied Hickey.

Desjardins ordered that Hickey not be allowed to communicate with two people who witnessed what happened before the Montreal police showed up.

Hickey is alleged to have assaulted a man and he is charged with pointing a firearm at the woman who also witnessed what happened before shots were fired.

The Montreal police were responding to a 911 call about an armed man at Davignon St. and de Salaberry Blvd. Witnesses reported hearing more than 30 shots fired between the suspect and police.

Houssam Abdallah, 52, and his 18-year-old son Abdel-Rahman Abdallah were shot outside their home on de Salaberry Blvd. after a man brandishing a pistol approached them and ordered the father to hand over the keys to his car. Houssam Abdallah had just returned from a camping trip with his family and his son was helping him unload the car.

The father was shot five times and the son was shot once. The bullet struck the 18-year-old just two centimetres from his spine. Last week, the son told The Gazette that the assailant noticed the police officers and fired a shot toward them before he and his father were shot.

Included among the 15 charges Hickey faces are four counts of attempted murder. All four people are members of the Montreal police, according to the Journal de Montréal. None of the charges involve the injuries suffered by Abdallah or his son, which suggests police officers might have shot the pair. Earlier this week, Grey said the Crown appears to be waiting for the results of ballistic tests to determine who is responsible for what happened to the Abdallahs.

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes is investigating the police shooting.

Hickey was also shot the night of Aug. 4.

The case returns to court on Nov. 1.
