164 health centres dealing with COVID-19 outbreaks in Quebec: report

110 CHSLDs and 54 hospitals are dealing with active COVID-19 outbreaks, according to data from the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ).

The number of positive cases has been steadily climbing since April 2024.

As of Aug. 20, 1,220 people with COVID-19 were hospitalized.

138 people went to the hospital with the virus, while 1,082 others had contracted it in hospital.

The overall positivity rate in the province sits at 21.4 per cent, but it was 2.1 per cent at the beginning of April.

The Health Ministry noted that people aged 60 and over, those suffering from one or more chronic illnesses and weakened immune systems have a higher risk of getting sick.

Experts believe the recent surge of cases stems from waning herd immunity, since the last booster shots were given out more than six months ago (Oct.-Dec. 2023), with only a small percentage of the population who took it.
