Melting snow and standing water are favourite breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and one female can lay 50 to 300 eggs in one shot, according to Montreal’s Insectarium.

Many of the eggs were laid last summer and were lying in wait under the snow.

“They hatch early in the spring, and the larvae develop in the cold water of ponds formed by melting snow,” the Insectarium says.

Mosquitoes are a natural part of the food chain, making their pest status negligible. However, the Quebec government has some simple advice to keep the mosquito population lower in your immediate surroundings. Tap here for the full list.

  • Remove water or empty waste from buckets, barrels, plates under flowerpots, vases, old tires or all other outdoor objects that may contain water.
  • Clean the gutters of your house.
  • Cover garbage cans.
  • Install a mosquito net on your rainwater reservoir.

Mosquitoes love it when it’s warm and damp, making today’s forecast nearly ideal.

Expect a high of 17 C during the day, with showers and the risk of a thunderstorm in the afternoon. At night, a low of 10 C and rainy.
