Legault to make ministerial ‘adjustment’ to replace Fitzgibbon

Immigration Minister Christine Fréchette is expected to replace Pierre Fitzgibbon as the Economy and Energy Minister in Quebec.

The CAQ government will make the announcement on Thursday, during Quebec Premier François Legault a 12:30 p.m. press conference that will close out the pre-sessional caucus in Rimouski.

When asked by journalists who will succeed Fitzgibbon on Wednesday, Legault was tight-lipped, asking journalists to wait until the official announcement.

Before making the leap into politics in 2022, Fréchette was president and CEO of the Chambre de commerce de l’Est de Montréal from 2016 to 2021 and Director of External and Institutional Relations at Montréal International from 2014 to 2016.

Whoever takes over for Fitzgibbon will, among other things, study Bill 69 on energy, which is set to begin next week in the National Assembly.

Questioned Wednesday in Rimouski, two leading figures in the CAQ government, Eric Girard and Christian Dubé, made it known that they did not want to take on the role, preferring to concentrate on their current responsibilities in Finance and Health.

The adjustment is expected to take place at 3:20 p.m. in Quebec, according to Legault’s official schedule.

French Language Minister Jean-François Roberge is expected to be sworn in as the new Immigration Minister. Roberge is also the former Education Minister.

In addition to being the Minister of Economy, Innovation and Energy, Pierre Fitzgibbon was also responsible for Regional Economic Development and the Montreal region.

Fitzgibbon announced his departure from political life on Wednesday.
