Number of marriages in Quebec remain stable in 2023

The number of marriages remained stable in Quebec in 2023.

While the number of marriages between a man and a woman fell by one per cent from the previous year, the number of marriages between two men or two women rose by four per cent.

The Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ) reported on Monday that 22,700 marriages were celebrated in 2023, compared with 22,908 in 2022.

Marriages between a man and a woman represent 97 per cent of the total, or 21,950. That’s 250 fewer, or one per cent less than in 2022.

There were 730 marriages between two men or two women, compared with 702 in 2022. This is an increase of 4 per cent.

“This number exceeds the previous peak recorded in 2018 (708),” the ISQ points out. Of this number, there were 375 marriages between women and 355 between men.

Generally speaking, the number of marriages fell from the early 1970s, when more than 50,000 were registered per year. It declined for three decades before stabilizing in the early 2000s, notes the Institute.
