New workers strike at three hotels in Quebec

More than 400 workers at the Bonaventure Hotel in Montreal, the PUR Hotel in Quebec City and the Delta in Sherbrooke are on strike Thursday.

Their goal is to increase the pressure to move negotiations forward with their employers.

This new walkout is one of the many strike days that have taken place since July as part of the 11th round of negotiations in the CSN hotel industry.

The union represents 30 Quebec hotels and over 3,500 workers.

The group says more strike days are expected to come, including new national strike days if negotiations don’t improve.

“With the business events and banquet season starting in hotels, the balance of power remains at stake. There is only one way to end the impasse and that is for hoteliers to finally understand that they will have to share the profits,” said Fédération du commerce (FC-CSN) Treasurer Michel Valiquette. “The mobilization has allowed us to move forward on several of our common demands. What is blocking us now is the salary. It will take more on the table to reach agreements.”

Some of their demands include a 36 per cent pay increase over four years and reducing their workload.
