Backbencher who told CAQ to ‘pull itself together’ quits caucus to sit as independent

QUEBEC — The Coalition Avenir Québec MNA for St-Jérôme, Youri Chassin, is calling on his own party to “pull itself together” and stop trying to solve Quebec’s problems by shovelling more money at them.

Chassin announced Thursday is leaving the CAQ caucus to sit as an independent.

“Today I can no longer defend the CAQ before my voters,” an emotional Chassin said at a press conference. “The energy and audacity to shake up the status quo is gone.”

In an open letter published in the Journal de Montréal Thursday, Chassin, who is considered a member of the right wing section of the party, said that after six years in office, the CAQ is sitting on a historic $11-billion deficit.

“We fell back on the old recipe, which consists of heaping money on problems instead of seeking to do things differently,” Chassin writes. “Despite this, citizens do not see the results either in extra places in daycare or to obtain government documents or in the expansion and modernization of the St-Jérôme hospital.”

Chassin’s dissatisfaction runs so deep he called in the media to discuss his political future at a press conference where he announced he is leaving the caucus. He has expressed his disappointment in the past over not being named to the cabinet by Premier François Legault.

There is speculation he will announce plans to sit as an independent, which would be a blow to Legault, who just last week lost his minister of the economy, Pierre Fitzgibbon.
