FIQ can’t ask members to refuse overtime, tribunal rules

The FIQ cannot ask its members to refuse to work overtime starting Thursday because such pressure tactics could jeopardize a service to which the public is entitled, the Tribunal administratif du travail has ruled.

In a decision delivered Monday, the labour tribunal ordered the FIQ to inform its 80,000 members that they must not stop working overtime in a concerted manner. The Tribunal adds that nurses will have to provide their regular work services as usual.

Last Wednesday, the Tribunal heard the complaint on this subject from the Conseil pour la protection des malades, following the announcement by the Fédération interprofessionnelle de la santé that it would ask its members to refuse to work overtime from Sept. 19.
