A challenger to Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante will be known in February, the city’s opposition party said Friday.

Ensemble Montréal will officially kicks off its leadership race on Oct. 15, with the party’s new leader to be unveiled at a leadership convention on Feb. 16 after a week-long voting period. All party members residing in Montreal will be eligible to vote.

“We are entering a crucial and particularly exciting phase for Ensemble Montréal and for the citizens of our metropolis,” party president Carmine Pollice said in a statement Friday. “We invite all those who want a fairer, more prosperous and more equitable Montreal to join our movement. Together, we’ll elect a visionary leader ready to tackle the complex challenges our city faces.”

Prospective leadership candidates have until Dec. 15 to submit their candidacies and must collect signatures from 200 members, including at least 100 signatures from new members, recruited from a minimum of 10 Montreal boroughs. They must also raise $15,000 in donations or party memberships.

This is the first leadership race the party has held in its short history, which was created in 2013, and was then known as Équipe Denis Coderre. It was the party Coderre led when he won the mayoral race in 2013.

It was renamed Ensemble Montréal in 2017 after Coderre was defeated by Plante and left the party.

Coderre returned to helm the party in the 2021 election, then resigned when he was defeated yet again by Plante.

Aside from Coderre, the party has had interim leaders, including Lionel Perez, and the current leader Aref Salem.

Municipal elections in Montreal take place next year.
