Yukon’s coroner has identified the man who died in a small plane crash earlier this week in Haines Junction.
Jean-Jacques Gemme, 68, of Amherst, Que., was killed Monday afternoon when the plane crashed at the Haines Junction airport after a sight-seeing flight in the area.
Gemme was among the five passengers on board the plane, along with the pilot. The condition of the other people who were on board is not known, though the town’s mayor said earlier that there were medevac planes in the community after the accident.
In a news release on Wednesday afternoon, the Yukon Coroner’s Service said Gemme left Quebec on May 4 and had been travelling since then with his partner through the western U.S. and Canada. The couple were on their way to Alaska when they stopped in Haines Junction on Monday.
The Transportation Safety Board (TSB), RCMP and the Yukon coroner continue to investigate the crash.
The TSB said earlier the Cessna U206 aircraft “collided with terrain on the airport’s ground,” just after 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
The plane was owned and operated by Rocking Star Adventures, which is based in Burwash Landing, Yukon. The company offers glacier sight-seeing flights as well as air charter services for industry and research, out of Haines Junction and Burwash Landing.
