Montreal police investigate homicide after Pointe-aux-Trembles fire

When the Montreal fire service arrived on the scene, firefighters located an unconscious person inside an apartment. Police say the person had marks of violence on her body. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Montreal police are investigating after a 42-year-old woman died following an apartment building fire in the borough of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles.

The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) major crimes unit is investigating the death as a homicide. It is the ninth homicide this year on SPVM territory.

Around 7 p.m. Tuesday, several 911 calls were made concerning a fire in an apartment building on de Versailles Street, according to SPVM spokesperson Const. Caroline Chèvrefils.

When the Montreal fire service arrived on the scene, firefighters located an unconscious person inside an apartment. Police say she had marks of violence on her body. 

Rescuers attempted resuscitation manoeuvres, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another woman was found nearby and is considered an important witness. She was taken to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. 

The circumstances surrounding the fire are currently unknown.

A perimeter was established so investigators can examine the site.
