Montreal police make arrest after finding body in burning Pointe-aux-Trembles apartment building

Montreal police have made an arrest in connection with the death of a 42-year-old woman following an apartment building fire late Tuesday in the borough of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles.

Police have arrested a 29-year-old woman who had been located nearby following the fire. The woman is in hospital being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

It is the ninth homicide this year on Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) territory.

Around 7 p.m. Tuesday, several 911 calls were made concerning a fire in an apartment building on de Versailles Street, according to SPVM spokesperson Const. Caroline Chèvrefils.

When the Montreal fire service arrived on the scene, firefighters located an unconscious person inside an apartment. Police say she had marks of violence on her body. 

Rescuers attempted resuscitation manoeuvres, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the fire are currently unknown.

A perimeter was established so investigators can examine the site.
