Police shoot man in distress carrying axe in Trois-Rivières, Que.

Police officers shot and killed a man wielding an axe in Trois-Rivières, Que., on Sunday.

Officers initially went to a park near De Calonne Street around 8 p.m. after a 911 caller reported a man who was in mental distress and appeared to be carrying an axe, according to a media release from the BEI, the agency that investigates when people are hurt or killed while interacting with police.

The man was on top of a public monument and police tried to communicate with him, but he didn’t co-operate, according to the BEI.

He threw an object in the air and came toward the police officers, carrying the axe.

The officers used pepper spray and tried to use their Tasers to subdue him, but he again moved toward officers.

At 8:25 p.m., the officers shot the man. He was transported to hospital where he was declared dead.
