Suspect on the run in Montreal after stealing car with baby inside, dropping it off near daycare

Montreal police are looking for a suspect who stole a car with a seven-month old baby inside, then dropped it off near a daycare before crashing the stolen vehicle.

The suspect stole the car at around at around 8:15 a.m. on Alexander Street in Montreal’s Pierrefonds-Roxboro borough, according to a spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).

Police say he quickly realized there was a baby inside the stolen car.

The baby — who is safe and sound — was assisted by daycare workers and reunited with its family.

At around 8:40 a.m., Montreal police received a call about a collision at the corner of St-Urbain Street and Crémazie Boulevard in the city’s Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough.

The suspect crashed the stolen car into a low concrete wall and fled on foot. Police confirmed the link between the two events.

A security perimeter was set up at the scene of the car crash.

Police say it’s too early to say if there will be charges against the baby’s mother, who is still in shock.
