Quebec provincial police have confirmed the body that was found in a southern Quebec town near the United States border on Thursday is that of a 29-year-old woman who had been reported missing.
The woman went missing from Hemmingford last Saturday.
On Thursday, search teams with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) found a woman’s body in the area where police had been looking for her, and said it needed time to identify it. That same day, the SQ also announced that a man had been arrested in connection with a disappearance.
The SQ has now confirmed the body found on Thursday is that of the missing woman.
On Friday, a 31-year-old man appeared at the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield courthouse and was formally charged with committing an indignity to a human body. The accused is the victim’s partner, according to Radio-Canada.
According to the charge sheet, he is alleged to have committed the crime between Sept. 15 and Sept. 21.
Sept. 21 is the day police issued a call to the public to help find her.
CBC News is not naming the accused because there is a publication ban in place to protect the identity of the victim and a child.
The case is expected to be back in court on Wednesday.
