21-year-old found guilty of second-degree murder in 2021 stabbing death of teen Jannai Dopwell-Bailey

A 21-year-old man was found guilty of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of 16-year-old Jannai Dopwell-Bailey outside his school in Côte-des-Neiges in 2021.

Andrei Donet was found guilty Sunday at the Montreal courthouse, after jurors delivered the verdict.

On Oct. 18, 2021, Dopwell-Bailey was stabbed at the end of his school day outside Programme Mile End and then ran back inside the school to seek help. He later died of his injuries.

Donet was charged just over a month after the killing.

His trial lasted a few weeks and the Crown entered into evidence surveillance camera footage that showed Donet, his accomplice and another person near Dopwell-Bailey’s school about 15 minutes before the end of classes. Several videos taken and posted to social media before and after the murder were also put into evidence.

The Crown argued that the killing was part of a conflict between two gangs.

Another man, who cannot be named because he was a minor at the time of his crime, was convicted of second-degree murder in December. He was 16 when he was charged and has not been sentenced. The Crown is seeking an adult sentence in that case.

Donet will receive an automatic life sentence, however, a judge will have to decide how many years he must serve before he is eligible for parole.

The jury recommended Donet be eligible for parole in 12 years.

Sentencing will take place in court later this month.
