3 arrested after shots fired downtown at building connected to man who owns two that burned in Old Montreal

Three young people aged 17, 19 and 20 were arrested after shots were fired late on Tuesday near Old Montreal. No one was injured in the shooting, but the suspects will be interviewed by Montreal police (SPVM) investigators.

The gunshots were heard around 11:50 p.m. near Saint-Antoine and Berri Street, in the Ville-Marie borough, close to Viger Square.

According to information gathered by the police, a small white truck was seen leaving the scene shortly after the shots were fired.

The vehicle was then spotted by police at the corner of René-Lévesque Blvd. and Sanguinet Street.

“While the vehicle was stopped, it headed west on René-Lévesque before being caught by police at the corner of l’Hôtel-de-Ville Ave. and Boisbriand Street,” said SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant.

Three men aged 17, 19 and 20, were found in the truck and were arrested. They were transported to the investigation centre for further proceedings.

“A firearm was located in the vehicle in question,” added Brabant.

Projectile impacts were found on a building, with shell casings on the ground.

City records show the building is owned by the same man – Emile Benamor – who owns the buildings that burned Oct. 4 on Notre Dame St. East and March 2023 at Place d’Youville in Old Montreal – where a total of nine people died in those fires.

The building is also listed as Benamor’s law office with the Quebec Bar Association.

CityNews has reached out to Benamor’s lawyer for comment.

SPVM investigators will go to the location where the shots were fired, as well as to the place where the suspects were intercepted.

“They will be assisted by forensic identification technicians to obtain more information and determine the circumstances surrounding these shots,” said Brabant.
