A 63-year-old grandfather and his five-year-old grandson were hit by an SUV on Monday morning in the Pointe-aux-Trembles district of Montreal.
It happened on 81st Avenue, not far from the intersection of Notre-Dame Street East, with calls coming into 911 at around 8 a.m.
The victims were transported to hospital, but authorities say they no longer fear for their lives – but they did suffer serious injuries.
The 34-year-old female driver was treated for shock and also taken to hospital.
The two pedestrians were crossing west on 81st Avenue to east when they were hit by the vehicle coming south, who was unable to avoid them.
The child and his grandfather attempted to cross the street at a place where crossing is not permitted, in order to walk to the bus stop.
A portion of 81st Avenue was completely closed to traffic as police are in the scene conducting their investigation.
This is the third school-age or preschool child to be injured in a similar accident in recent days.
Last Thursday, a three-year-old child on his way to daycare with his father was hit by a car in downtown Montreal, after briefly escaping his father’s vigilance. The young victim suffered serious injuries.
Less than an hour later, another child, aged six, suffered minor head injuries after being hit by a small school bus in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough.
