Business in Montreal’s Verdun target of arson

A business in Montreal’s Verdun was the target of an arson attack overnight from Sunday to Monday — the damage was minor and there were no injuries.

Around 1:15 a.m., emergency services received a call reporting that an individual appeared to be “setting fire” to a business located at the intersection of Verdun and Argyle streets.

“When the police arrived on the scene, they put out an initial fire inside the business with a fire extinguisher,” said a Montreal police spokesperson, Caroline Chèvrefils, Monday morning.

“According to initial information, the suspects broke the window of the front door of the business and set fire inside the business and then fled before the police arrived,” she added.

Chèvrefils noted that no incendiary object was found at the scene, but that traces of accelerant were spotted.

Damage to the business was minor and no one was injured.

The investigation was transferred to the SPVM’s arson squad, and no arrests have been made so far.

Investigators will, among other things, check whether nearby security cameras have captured anything of interest.
