Federal government unveiled plan for new courthouse in Montreal

Canadian Minister of Public Service and Procurement Jean-Yves Duclos officially unveiled the design of a new federal courthouse in Old Montreal.

According to a press release, the complex will include the Federal Court of Appeal, the Federal Court, the Court of Appeal of the Court Martial of Canada, the Tax Court of Canada, and the Courts Administration Service (CAS) in Montreal.

“Thanks to modern, secure and accessible facilities, this new judicial complex will improve access to justice for Canadians and preserve judicial independence,” said Duclos. “Meeting high environmental standards, this project demonstrates the importance that our government places on our workers.”

Ottawa ensures that the building will fit into the existing architectural landscape in Old Montreal.

The new courthouse will house offices and courtrooms for the federal government on nine floors, plus basement parking – costing $160 million.

Construction started recently on an empty lot on Saint-Jacques Street and Notre-Dame Street, near Place d’Armes.

The empty space had been used as a parking lot from the 1960’s until this year.
