Five suspects arrested in connection with extortion in Montreal

Montreal police (SPVM) arrested five suspects as part of two separate investigations involving crimes targeting a Verdun bar and a downtown restaurant.

According to the SPVM, a suspect was arrested on Wednesday for an attempted arson attack on a bar on Wellington Street in Verdun on July 12.

A search of the suspect’s home uncovered several pieces of evidence.

The suspect, 14, was released with conditions and a promise to appear in Quebec youth court, the SPVM added.

Two other 14-year-old suspects were arrested in connection with the same case at the end of the summer. The teenagers appeared in court in September to face charges of attempted arson, possession of incendiary material, conspiracy, disguise for a criminal purpose and mischief ($5,000 and under).

Police say the investigation is still ongoing since the bar was also targeted in June 2024.

Montreal police also arrested two suspects on Thursday, involved in threats and firearm discharges that targeted a restaurant on de la Montagne Street, in the Ville-Marie borough last summer.

Threats were made against the establishment, then shots were fired in front of the restaurant in August.

The two suspects, a 30-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, are due to appear at the Montreal courthouse on Friday.

According to the SPVM, searches of four Montreal residences are still underway.

The police are urging local merchants who received threats to report it immediately to the SPVM by calling 911 or going to their local police station.
