Heavy rain from remnants of Hurricane Beryl headed for Montreal

Heavy rain is expected Wednesday in southern Quebec and eastern Ontario as the remnants of Hurricane Beryl continue northward.

Environment Canada issued several rainfall warnings for both provinces, saying that the weather event will continue until Thursday in some areas.

Montreal and Toronto will be hardest hit by the rainfall.

Depending on the area, between 40 mm and 80 mm of rain is expected, but the federal weather agency warns that the rainfall amounts could be higher locally.

Additionally, there is a possibility of torrential rains.

Environment Canada emphasized that flooding risks are possible, and the low-pressure system will be accompanied by moderate winds.

Rain is expected to begin later on Wednesday in Quebec and will become more intense in the evening and overnight.

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Beryl is now a post-tropical cyclone. At its peak in the Caribbean, Beryl reached the strength of a Category five hurricane.

The storm reportedly killed 11 people in the Caribbean and seven in the United States, including six in Texas and one in Louisiana. The rains also caused extensive property damage and has left millions without access to electricity.
