Montreal cyclists name the 10 most dangerous intersections

McGill University researchers say there needs to be safer cycling infrastructure near certain intersections in Montreal after bikers named the top 10 worst spots in a recent survey.

The Transportation Research at McGill (TRAM) team polled 1,500 cyclists to identify the most dangerous intersections in the city, and according to the results, the area between Berri, Ontario and Saint-Catherine Street is considered the most dangerous.

According to the data, the following areas were mentioned the most by bikers:

  • Ontario and Berri
  • Parc and Mont-Royal
  • Saint-Joseph East and D’Iberville
  • Papineau and Crémazie
  • De Maisonneuve and Décarie
  • De Maisonneuve and Berri
  • Saint-Urbain and Président-Kennedy
  • Sainte-Croix and Côte-de-Liesse
  • Dickson and Notre-Dame
  • De la Vérendrye and De l’Église

The TRAM team recommends that the City of Montreal analyze the areas where bicycles, vehicles and pedestrians come into conflict and identify the reasons for collisions and near-accidents. Also, they encourage the city to look at cyclists’ preferred routes.

Additionally, the TRAM teams says the city should redesign these intersections to prioritize safety and facilitate smoother travel.
