Montreal’s Lachine Canal: a newly popular fishing spot

Montreal’s Lachine Canal, specifically the portion in Griffintown, is now a popular fishing spot, after having an industrial past.

Henry Leung is one of many urban fishers dropping a line in the canal and says there’s a variety of fish because it’s connected to the St. Lawrence River.

He has been passionate about fishing since his childhood.

According to Parks Canada, who is behind the operations at the Lachine Canal, the Pumpkinseed, Northern pike, and Common Carp are among some of the species of fish that can be found in the waters of the canal.

Despite catching them, Leung does not consume the fish, partly due to pollution in the canal.

To add to his passion, Leung also runs a YouTube channel dedicated to fishing. Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, he says he has seen more people showing interest in learning how to fish in Montreal.
