Quebec launches advertising campaign to convince young adults to become teachers

The Quebec government is launching an advertising campaign aimed specifically at young adults in the hope of convincing some of them to become teachers, at a time when the teacher shortage remains a hot issue in the education network.

According to the government, the “Deviens prof!” (“Become a teacher!”) campaign is aimed specifically at young adults aged 18 to 35. It will be rolled out over the next two months in traditional media and on social media.

In addition to more conventional advertising, the campaign will also include a series of humorous vignettes featuring teachers who will talk about their daily lives and present reasons for choosing this profession.

According to Education Minister Bernard Drainville, the campaign will not only showcase the benefits of teaching to young people who might already be tempted to choose this career path, but also to promote the profession among the general public.

“We know that this won’t solve everything and that we still face challenges, but to attract new teaching talent, it’s important to establish a positive discourse around education and to highlight the major advances of recent collective agreements,” said Drainville in a press release.

On the eve of the start of the new school year, the number of teachers missing from the classroom once again made headlines.

With just a few days to go before students returned to school, Drainville reported that some 5,700 teaching positions needed to be filled. That number decreased in the following weeks.

On Monday, Drainville reiterated that, under the new collective agreements, new teachers will start at $65,000 a year. He also pointed out that classroom assistants will be deployed in every secondary, primary, and pre-school class.
