Snow storm causes power outages and school closures in Quebec

Around 280,000 Hydro-Quebec customers are in the dark this morning as a significant spring storm rolls through the region.

As of 8 a.m., the power company has reported that 78,729 customers in Montreal and 86,000 in the Laurentians are without power.

Environment Canada issued snowfall warnings for most of the region, with as much as 25 centimetres expected to fall.

In Montérégie, the outages have affected over 37,000 people while in Outaouais, 25,000 customers do not have access to power.

Residents of Laval (21,683), Lanaudière (18,000) and Estrie (10,000) are also affected by the outages.

The utility company said that many power lines are on the ground due to strong winds and the heavy weight of snow on the branches.

According to Hydro-Quebec on X, they have close to 1000 workers on the ground trying to get power back to customers as quickly as possible.

The snow that fell overnight also led to the closure of many schools in Outaouais, Laval, the Laurentians, Lanaudière, and Montérégie.

Some of the school closures include Centre de services scolaire de Laval, Centre de services scolaire des Affluents, Centre de services scolaire des Mille-Îles, Lester B. Pearson School Board, Courtland Park International School, Harold Napper School, CPE Hebrew Foundation, CPE Lachine, Sacred Heart School and many more.
